![]() The park was a home to the Batwa pygmies who are the indigenous people of the area. The park has only one gorilla group Nyakagezi. The national park encompasses bamboo forest, Albertine Rift montane forests, Ruwenzori-VIRUNGA montane moorlands with tree heath, and an alpine zone at higher altitudes. The parks altitude ranges between 2,227m and 4,127m (7,306 to 13,540 ft) above sea level. It shares borders with Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and VIRUNGA National Park in D.R Congo. The volcanoes’ slopes contain various ecosystems and are biologically diverse, and their peaks provide a striking backdrop to this gorgeous scenery. Mgahinga forms part of the much larger Virunga Conservation Area which includes adjacent parks in these countries. These volcanoes are part of the spectacular Virunga Range that lies along the border region of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. It is located in the Virunga Mountains and encompasses extinct volcanoes Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo. The park was created to protect the endangered mountain gorillas that live in its dense forests and is also a home to the rare golden monkeys. Most of its lower altitudes have been turned into crop gardens. Mgahinga national park was a game reserve between 1930s and 1950s, and was established as a national park in 1991. ![]() The Karisoke Research Center, founded by Dian Fossey to observe gorillas in their native habitat, is located between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. The VIRUNGA Mountains are home of the critically endangered mountain gorilla, listed on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species due to habitat loss, poaching, disease, and war. The oldest mountain is Mount Sabyinyo, which rises 3,634 metres above sea level. Mount Karisimbi is the highest volcano at 4,507 metres. Recent eruptions occurred in 2006 and in January 2010.
